Chelsea manager Emma Hayes criticized Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall for what she perceived as “male aggression” during an incident with midfielder Erin Cuthbert as she prepared to take a throw-in towards the end of the Conti Cup final on Sunday.

Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory over Chelsea in extra time at Molineux, clinching the trophy and dashing Hayes’ hopes of achieving a quadruple in her final season in charge.

Stina Blackstenius netted the sole goal of the match in the 115th minute, following an unsettling moment when Frida Maanum required medical attention in the 95th minute after collapsing off the ball.

Eidevall responded to Hayes’ accusation, calling it “irresponsible” and denied any form of aggression. Additionally, a post-match confrontation occurred between the two managers, with Hayes appearing to push Eidevall as he approached to shake hands.

Speaking at the post-match news conference, Hayes emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism on the touchline. She expressed disappointment with Eidevall’s behavior, particularly his interaction with some of her players.

“I believe there’s a certain conduct expected on the touchline,” Hayes remarked. “I find it unacceptable to display male aggression towards players. Confronting players in that manner crosses a line.”

Hayes clarified that her comments and actions after the final whistle were directly related to Eidevall’s conduct towards her players during the game.

“My concern stemmed from multiple incidents, including one involving Ann-[Katrin Berger] attempting to retrieve the ball, but the way he confronted Erin was particularly concerning. This isn’t the first time his touchline behavior has been questioned,” she explained.

Earlier in the season, Eidevall had faced criticism from Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor for his touchline demeanor. However, Eidevall refuted accusations of aggression.

“I consider such labeling to be highly irresponsible,” Eidevall responded. “I don’t believe it accurately reflects my behavior. I am uncomfortable with such characterizations and do not believe they are truthful.”

Addressing the media after Hayes, Eidevall disclosed that the disagreement between the two managers originated before kick-off, regarding the choice of using a single-ball system instead of a multiball system.

“Arsenal preferred a multiball system, while Chelsea insisted on a single-ball system. Consequently, the final was conducted with a single-ball system,” Eidevall stated during his post-match press conference.

He further explained that tension arose when Chelsea attempted to use a new ball for a quick throw-in after the original ball was kicked away. Eidevall’s intervention, reminding Chelsea of their preference for a single-ball system, led to an altercation with Cuthbert.

Regarding Hayes’ conduct after the match, Eidevall emphasized the importance of maintaining composure, regardless of the result.

“It’s essential to exhibit professionalism in the technical area and in post-match interactions. Being gracious in victory or defeat is fundamental. I stand by my conduct, and others should reflect on their actions,” Eidevall concluded.
