Kamala Harris, the US Vice President, navigated the treacherous waters of the Israel-Palestine conflict with care during her speech at the Democratic National Convention. As she accepted the party’s presidential nomination, Harris reiterated her unwavering support for Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas’ attacks, stating “I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself and I will always ensure Israel has the ability to defend itself”. However, she also acknowledged the devastating impact of Israel’s actions on Gaza, saying “So many innocent lives lost, desperate, hungry people fleeing for safety, over and over again. The scale of suffering is heartbreaking”.
Harris emphasized her efforts to work with President Joe Biden on a ceasefire deal that would release hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, a step towards helping Palestinians realize their right to dignity, security, freedom, and self-determination. During her meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Harris offered similar words, stopping short of implementing concrete changes to Biden’s strong support for Israel. Her remarks risk disappointing activists who demand more explicit change, such as ceasing weapon sales to Israel that have been used to kill Palestinian civilians.

Despite the presence of protests and criticisms, the convention proceeded relatively smoothly, with few outbursts and a focus on Harris’s historic nomination. However, not all delegates were swayed by Harris’s efforts to bridge the divide. Uncommitted delegates, who represent primary voters who did not back a candidate due to their opposition to the war, held a press conference outside the United Centre, voicing their discontent over the lack of Palestinian representation on stage. They pointed out that the parents of an American hostage were given the opportunity to speak, while Palestinians were omitted.
Harris’s words, while well-intentioned, may not be enough to ease the suffering of those affected by the ongoing conflict. The United States has long been a key player in the Middle East, and its stance on the conflict is closely watched by both sides. As the Biden administration continues to navigate the complex situation, it remains to be seen whether the US will take a more active role in promoting a lasting peace in the region. For now, the tension between Israelis and Palestinians remains, with no clear end in sight.
