Julie Foudy, a legendary figure in USWNT history, disclosed that the team is engaging in ‘difficult conversations’ regarding the social media controversy involving midfielder Korbin Albert.
Despite securing a 2-1 victory against Japan in the SheBelieves Cup, Albert’s appearance off the bench was met with boos from the crowd, reflecting the ongoing scrutiny surrounding her.
The midfielder’s involvement in liking and sharing anti-LGBTQ+ content on TikTok, as well as endorsing a post targeting U.S. icon Megan Rapinoe, has stirred significant unrest within the U.S. camp.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Foudy emphasized the necessity for internal dialogue within the team. She stressed the importance of addressing such issues promptly, considering their broader implications on team chemistry and dynamics.
While Albert is regarded as a promising young talent, her actions have sparked concerns that transcend the realm of soccer.
Foudy remarked, “We’ve had hard conversations on this team before, and we will continue to have hard conversations – and they’re having those conversations, I’m told.
I think that’s a good step, this is a young player who has a bright future, but also you have to realize that effects the chemistry in so many ways. This is beyond soccer, and so that is something that needs to be dealt with quickly.”
As Albert’s controversial social media behavior continues to draw attention, veterans Alex Morgan and Lindsay Horan publicly expressed disappointment in the 20-year-old’s actions.
The repercussions of this incident remain uncertain, pending further deliberation within the team.
Meanwhile, the USWNT is set to face the winner of the semifinal clash between Canada and Brazil in the SheBelieves Cup championship game on Tuesday.
Despite the controversy, Albert remains in contention, having contributed 12 minutes off the bench during the semifinal encounter.
