Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns is set to undergo surgery to repair a torn left meniscus on Thursday night. However, there’s optimism as he’s expected to return early in the Western Conference playoffs.
Towns will undergo reevaluation in four weeks, but the surgery is anticipated to pave the way for his comeback during the initial stages of the postseason, sources disclosed.
The Timberwolves (44-19) are in contention for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference, maintaining a slim half-game lead over the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Towns is scheduled to undergo the surgery early next week.
Upon discovering the tear via an MRI in recent days, Towns, in consultation with team physicians and specialists, swiftly committed to the procedure.
This decision offers him a chance to rehabilitate and rejoin the team during what is shaping up to be the most successful regular season in franchise history.
Having made his fourth All-Star Game appearance in 2024, Towns is among the five players in the NBA averaging 20 points, shooting 50% from the field, and hitting 40% on 3-pointers.
With Towns on the court, the Timberwolves boast an offensive efficiency of 116.5, compared to 106.1 in his absence, per Stats & Information.
While Towns recuperates, the Timberwolves will rely on their deep frontline, with Naz Reid expected to see increased minutes.
