June is LGBT pride month and now a new One Piece character tied to the transgender community is being commented on for his recent cameo in the anime.
It’s no secret that LGBTQ pride issues haven’t been handled in the best way in anime. The media as a whole is still failing in its approach to gender identity, but One Piece has tried to address the issue with care.
More recently, the community found comfort in Yamato, as Kaido’s son identifies as a man very much like Oden. And now, the fandom is moving to back the heroin light of a debate.
The whole situation started in light of Yamato’s big anime debut. The hero was shown very fast in the newest arc of the anime produced by Toei Animation. As you can imagine, fans were raving about the shot, but the cameo lacked the context of Yamato’s gender identity.
This issue coupled with the new One Piece chapter led some to question how Yamato views his genre, but fans quickly shut it down. La Verdad noticias shares more details below.
Is Yamato transgender in the anime?
The evidence showing Yamato as transgender is very abundant in Eiichiro Oda’s manga and this is not yet clarified in the anime. Not only does the hero use traditional male pronouns, but so do Luffy and all of the Straw Hats.
Even Kaido and the Beast Pirates can do it, so many fans know that Yamato must take his gender identity seriously. This character is far from the only transgender character to appear in the shonen series, but her overtly feminine appearance still baffles fans.
Manga readers have had time to normalize Yamato’s identity, but the anime fandom has not. Based on looks alone, anime fans could easily mistake Yamato for a woman, but that’s not the case here.
Who is Yamato One Piece?
Yamato is Kaido’s daughter of the Four Emperors and calls herself “Kozuki Oden”. This deep admiration for the legendary samurai has led to the decision to embody everything related to the samurai to the point of claiming to be a man too, and therefore Yamato, a popular character in One Piece, is widely known as the son by Kaido.
