As the 2024 T20 World Cup came to a close, Bangladesh’s fans were left disappointed as their team failed to capitalize on an early promising start. Despite securing a spot in the Super Eight stage with three victories in four group games, Bangladesh’s performances regressed as they lost their first two games against Australia and India by 28 runs and 50 runs respectively. The team had a mathematical chance to seal the semifinal spot against Afghanistan, but they never really went for it, ultimately signing off from the tournament with an eight-run loss and a 0-3 record in the Super Eight.

Bangladesh’s batting unit was one of the main factors behind their disappointing performances. In their first game against Sri Lanka, Soumya Sarkar and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto played uppish shots and holed out near the 30-yard circle, despite Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy making impressive contributions. Against South Africa, Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Taskin Ahmed blew away the top and middle-order, but the batting unit’s rash approach saw them give away wickets, ultimately leading to a four-run loss. However, against the Netherlands, Shakib led from the front to score 64 off 46, and Bangladesh posted 159 on the board, eventually securing a 25-run victory.

The batting unit’s lack of positive intent and hunger to win games continued to plague the team in the Super Eight stage. Against Australia, Bangladesh’s batting unit started poorly, and against India, they were restricted to 146/8 and lost by 50 runs. Against Afghanistan, the bowlers did well to restrict the opposition to 115, but the batting unit’s poor performance saw them fall short of the target by eight runs. Despite some impressive bowling performances, Bangladesh’s batting unit failed to deliver, and the team ultimately signed off from the tournament without a win in the Super Eight.
