World Wrestling Entertainment, known as WWE, has a rich history of acquiring various wrestling organizations and their assets, dating back to the 1930s. Some of the notable promotions that WWE now owns include WCW, ECW, AWA, WCCW, Stampede Wrestling, and EVOLVE. One of the most significant acquisitions by Vince McMahon was World Championship Wrestling in early 2001, solidifying WWE’s dominance in the wrestling industry.
Recently, WWE made a notable filing related to its WCW acquisition. On June 4, according to records from the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO), WWE applied for a trademark for the term ‘WCW.’ This trademark encompasses a wide range of products, including collectibles, party supplies, trading cards, books, comics, stationary, decals, posters, and more.
This isn’t the first time WWE has sought a trademark related to WCW merchandise. Similar filings were made in May 2020 and March 2021, bringing the total number of active trademarks related to WCW to five for the company based in Stamford. These moves indicate WWE’s ongoing efforts to protect and capitalize on its extensive wrestling history and intellectual property.

In a separate development, former WCW star Alex Wright has expressed openness to returning to the United States to work for WWE as a coach at the Performance Center. Wright, known as Das Wunderkind, had a successful career in WCW, holding titles such as Cruiserweight Champion, World Television Champion, and World Tag Team Champion. After WWE acquired WCW in 2001, Wright’s contract was not renewed, leading him to explore other career paths before eventually establishing his wrestling school and promoting talent like Giovanni Vinci.
In a recent interview with Cheap Heat Productions, Wright shared his willingness to join WWE as a trainer if the opportunity arose. He fondly recalled his time in the United States, praising the country and its people. Despite venturing into other professions post-WCW, the prospect of rejoining WWE in a coaching capacity holds great appeal to Wright due to his affinity for the industry and the positive experiences he had during his earlier wrestling career.
