A sombre mood has enveloped the port of Porticello as rescue teams struggle to locate the missing passengers of the luxury yacht Bayesian, which sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday morning. As the search and rescue effort continues, concern is mounting for the fate of the high-ranking business executives and their families who were on board. Despite the recovery of two bodies, officials remain hopeful that some of the missing passengers, including technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, may still be alive. Experts believe that air pockets could have formed as the yacht sank, allowing survivors to potentially breathe for a short period.

Salvatore Cocina, the head of Sicily’s civil protection agency, emphasized that the priority remains finding those still missing, while an investigation will be conducted at a later date. A massive search effort is underway, involving the Italian Coastguard, local fire service, and police. The search area stretches across several kilometres of coastline, making the task a challenging one.

A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch arrived in Porticello on Wednesday morning to inspect the internal hull of the yacht. Although the MAIB is conducting the investigation, Italian Coastguard officials stressed that the organization is not involved in the search for missing people and has not been requested to assist. Meanwhile, a helicopter has been drafted in to help scour the waters, while divers from the local fire service and police boat were seen entering the water.

As the search continues, emergency services staff are scrambling to locate any signs of the missing passengers. The search is expected to be a long and difficult one, but rescue teams remain hopeful of finding the missing passengers alive. The recovery of the body of Judy Bloomer, the wife of Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, adds to the sense of tragedy surrounding the sinking of the yacht. Despite the difficulties, rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate the missing passengers, including Chris Morvillo, a lawyer, and his wife Neda. The sombre mood in Porticello is a testament to the gravity of the situation, and the longing for news of those still missing.
