Atleast 30 Injured At Ski Resort in Spain At Pyrenees Mountain After Lift Collapse

Dozens of individuals were injured when a ski lift collapsed at a resort in Spain, emergency officials informed.

Around 30 people were hurt in the incident, which occurred at approximately 12:00 p.m. local time at the Astun ski resort in the Pyrenees mountains, according to the Aragon civil protection press office.

Among the injured, ten individuals were taken to the hospital—two with “maximum priority” and another two who required “urgent attention,” the press office confirmed. Fortunately, there were no fatalities.

The ski lift, which stands 15 meters (over 49 feet) high, had part of its structure collapse after one of its pulleys became detached, the Spanish Civil Guard shared on X. As the lift descended, some chairs were destabilized, with some turning upside down, Spanish public broadcaster RTVE reported.

A video from the scene, shared by the Civil Guard, showed dozens of people standing in the snow on the mountain, stranded after the lift broke down.

“It’s like a cable has come off, the chairs have bounced, and people have been thrown off,” one witness told RTVE. A total of 14 ambulances were dispatched to the resort, as confirmed by the region’s civil protection.

By 3 p.m. local time, all individuals left stranded by the collapse had been evacuated, as stated in a post on X by the Spanish government’s delegate in Aragon, Fernando Beltrán Blazquez.

Spain’s President, Pedro Sanchez, expressed his shock over the incident, mentioning that he had communicated with the president of Aragon to offer the Spanish government’s support. Sanchez added, “All of our affection goes to the injured and their families.”
