Donald Trump‘s tardiness to a political rally in Michigan on Friday was not unexpected, as he was busy recording a three-hour interview with popular podcaster Joe Rogan in Austin, Texas. Twitter announced his departure from Texas with a humorous tweet, stating, “EPIC: President Trump just wrapped a 3 HOUR episode of the Joe Rogan Podcast! We’re coming now, Michigan!” His supporters, however, were not amused, as thousands abandoned the event, leaving only a few hundred loyal fans to brave the cold and wait for his arrival.
Those who chose to stick around bundled up in blankets, whiling away the time until Trump’s eventual landing. Some attendees took it in stride, recognizing that tardiness is a characteristic often associated with the former president. Karen Targanski from Bay City, Michigan, said, “Well, we’d rather they were on time, but seeing Mr. Trump would be worth the wait.” Others, however, grew frustrated with the wait, feeling that their time was being wasted.
The rally was held at the Traverse City airport, where temperatures had dropped significantly as supporters braved the darkness. It’s unclear why Trump chose to prioritize his interview with Rogan over his supporters’ time, but it’s likely an attempt to connect with younger male voters who are fans of the popular podcaster.
Meanwhile, Democrat Kamala Harris was in Texas on Friday, appearing with superstar Beyoncé at an event highlighting the state’s abortion ban, enacted after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. Ironically, three of the justices who voted to overturn Roe were nominated by Trump, highlighting the complexities and contradictions within the political terrain.
Despite his tardiness, Trump’s supporters remained loyal, and his eventual arrival at the rally was met with applause. Whether his delay will impact his campaign remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – Trump’s ability to generate controversy and attention will continue to shape the political terrain.
