Sean “Diddy” Combs, the hip-hop mogul, has appeared in federal court in Manhattan, marking his first appearance before Judge Arun Subramanian, who will preside over his trial on sex trafficking charges. Combs’ lawyers have been attempting to secure his release on bail since his September 16 arrest, but so far, two judges have concluded that he would pose a danger to the community if freed. His lawyers are now appealing those bail findings to the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals, arguing that the proposed bail package, which included home detention and electronic monitoring, would not prevent him from tampering with witnesses or obstructing the ongoing investigation.

The charges against Combs, who has pleaded not guilty, include racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, stemming from allegations that date back to 2008. According to the indictment, he coerced and abused women for years with the help of a network of associates and employees, using tactics such as blackmail, kidnapping, arson, and physical beatings to silence his victims.

In court documents filed on Wednesday, Combs’ lawyers accused the Department of Homeland Security of leaking a video to the media that shows Combs punching and kicking his former protege and girlfriend, R&B singer Cassie, in a hotel hallway in 2016. The lawyers claim that the video’s release, along with other government leaks, has led to damaging and prejudicial pre-trial publicity that will taint the jury pool and deny Combs a fair trial. Combs himself has apologized for the incident, saying he was “disgusted” with himself both then and now.

Federal prosecutors responded to the defense’s claims by telling the judge that the government was not in possession of the video before it was aired on CNN. The prosecutors also declined to offer a specific timeline for the start of the trial, indicating that they will not express a preference for a specific timing.

The hearing before Judge Subramanian is expected to set deadlines for lawyers on both sides to submit arguments that will establish the boundaries for the trial. Combs’ lawyers are seeking to start the trial in April or May, although a specific date has not been set. The outcome of the trial will have significant implications not only for Combs personally but also for the music industry and American society as a whole.

As Combs’ case moves forward, questions remain about the allegations against him and the government’s investigation. His lawyers continue to push for his release on bail, while prosecutors work to build their case against him. The judge’s final decision on the trial’s timing and boundaries will likely have a significant impact on the outcome of the case and Combs’ future.
