The recent unauthorized use of popular songs at President Donald Trump‘s campaign rallies has sparked widespread outrage among the music industry. The latest band to join the chorus of disapproval is Foo Fighters, whose hit song “My Hero” was played at a rally in Arizona without their permission. The band expressed their discontent on social media, stating “No” when asked if they gave consent for the use, and reposted the query with the caption “let us be clear”. According to their spokesperson, Foo Fighters were not even asked for permission and would not have granted it even if they were.

Many other artists have expressed similar sentiments about Trump’s use of their music without permission. Celine Dion’s team condemned Trump for playing her classic song “My Heart Will Go On” during a campaign rally, stating that the use was “in no way” authorized. Johnny Marr, the guitarist of The Smiths, slammed Trump after the band’s hit “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want” was played at a rally. Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler has also been vocal about the issue, sending a letter to Trump in 2018 ordering him to stop playing the band’s songs at political rallies. Tyler had previously sent cease-and-desist letters to the Trump campaign in 2015 for using the band’s music without permission.

The estates of late musicians Prince and Tom Petty have also demanded that Trump refrain from using their music, while Rihanna issued a cease-and-desist letter after he played her 2007 hit “Don’t Stop The Music” at an event. Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne sent a notice to Trump banning him from using Black Sabbath music in his campaign videos. The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Linkin Park, and many other artists have taken similar actions against Trump’s unauthorized use of their music.

The controversy highlights the importance of respecting the creative work of artists and the laws that protect it. The use of music without permission is not only a violation of copyright laws but also a disrespect to the artists and their work. Artists should not be taken advantage of, and it is crucial for them to stand up against unauthorized use. The numerous artists who have taken action against Trump’s campaign are setting a strong example for others to follow.
