A fierce storm rolled in off the coast of Sicily, claiming the life of one person and leaving six others missing after a luxury sailboat, the Bayesian, capsized and sank in the rough seas. The 2008-built vessel, registered in the UK, was moored off the port of Porticello when the storm hit, bringing with it strong winds and water spouts. The storm, which had passed by Monday morning, left behind a trail of devastation as the sailboat took on water and eventually capsized around 5am.
Despite the efforts of rescue teams, which included a helicopter and boats from the coast guard, carabinieri, fire rescue, and civil protection service, six people remained missing and were feared to have perished in the tragedy. One body had been recovered from the wreck, which was located at a depth of 50 meters, and was placed on a nearby island, while 15 people had been rescued and taken to shore for medical treatment.
Among the rescued were ten crew members and five passengers, including an Irish citizen. The Bayesian was a popular tourist destination, offering luxury sailing trips to visitors from around the world, and its sudden capsizing was a shock to the sailing community.
The incident has been met with widespread shock and an investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances that led to the tragic accident. As the search for the missing continued, deep-water divers were dispatched to the scene to try and locate and recover any remaining bodies or debris from the wreck. The survivors, shaken by their ordeal, were being treated for their injuries, and the community was coming to terms with the devastating loss of life. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that lurk on the high seas, and the importance of being prepared for the unexpected.
