Troi Irons, an LA-based singer-songwriter, found himself in a difficult situation when his financial struggles led him to plead for “money for dinner” to 3Tone Music’s CEO Dean Roberts, who happened to be partying at Glastonbury. Despite his promising career, Irons’ failure to receive his wages left him reliant on 3Tone for accommodation and financial support, making him vulnerable to the company’s control over his income, accommodation, and even visa arrangements.
3Tone Music claimed that no contractual terms had been agreed upon and that Irons hadn’t done any work for them, but the tribunal disagreed, ruling that Irons was an employee of the company and entitled to wages. This decision marked a significant win for Irons, who was awarded £13,691 in respect of unpaid wages, £2,692 for accrued but untaken holiday, and £4,331 for a further work agreement.
