French authorities are going all out to ensure the security of the upcoming Paralympic Games in Paris, with Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announcing that around 25,000 police officers will be deployed daily to safeguard the safety of athletes and spectators. The Paralympics, which will take place from August 28 to September 8, will feature around 4,400 athletes competing in 19 venues across the city, including wheelchair tennis at Roland Garros, track and field at the Stade de France, basketball at the Bercy Arena, and swimming at La Défense Arena. The torch relay will also be protected as the flame arrives in France on Sunday from England’s Stoke Mandeville, the birthplace of the Paralympic Games. As the flame makes its way to Paris, police will be vigilant in order to prevent any potential threats to the torch and its carriers.
Darmanin also announced that Israel’s delegation of 27 athletes will receive 24-hour protection from elite police officers due to the ongoing tensions surrounding the war in Gaza and the threat of regional conflict in the Middle East. While there has been no “tangible” terror threat detected to the Paralympics, security will remain a top priority for the duration of the games. With the games expected to draw in huge crowds and attention from around the world, French authorities are taking no chances in order to ensure that everyone is able to enjoy the event safely and without incident.
