Nepal’s capital city saw hundreds of LGBTQ+ individuals and supporters gathering for the annual Pride parade, marking a significant milestone since the country legalized same-sex marriages in November 2023. This momentous occasion was a testament to the community’s unwavering resilience and determination. As the parade took place during the Gai Jatra festival, it was a celebration of both the community’s Pride and the country’s long-standing traditions.

Gay rights activist Bhumika Shrestha, who participated in the parade, emphasized the importance of preserving Nepal’s cultural heritage, including the Gai Jatra festival, while also celebrating the community’s Pride. Shrestha’s sentiments echoed the sentiments of many in the LGBTQ+ community who believe that it is possible to preserve traditional values while also advocating for greater acceptance and understanding of LGBTQ+ individuals.

The Pride parade was a vibrant and colorful display, with participants dressed in elaborate costumes and waving rainbow flags. The atmosphere was electric, with attendees cheering and dancing to the music. Amidst the joy and celebration, there were also glimpses of the community’s struggles, with some participants carrying signs that read “We are human too” and “Equality now”.

The event was particularly significant for the LGBTQ+ community in Nepal, where same-sex relationships were previously criminalized. The legalization of same-sex marriages in November 2023 has brought a new sense of freedom and acceptance to the community. However, there is still much work to be done to ensure that LGBTQ+ individuals are treated with dignity and respect.

Despite the progress made, there are still many challenges facing the LGBTQ+ community in Nepal. Discrimination and stigma are widespread, and many LGBTQ+ individuals face harassment, violence, and marginalization. In addition, many face barriers to accessing healthcare, education, and employment opportunities.

However, the Pride parade, and the community’s continued advocacy efforts, are helping to change the narrative. The event sent a powerful message that the LGBTQ+ community is valued and recognized, and that they deserve the same rights and freedoms as everyone else. For many in the community, the parade was a source of pride and empowerment, and a reminder that they are not alone.

As the parade came to a close, the atmosphere remained upbeat and celebratory. Participants and spectators alike were beaming with pride, knowing that they had played a part in creating a more inclusive and accepting society. The event was a testament to the power of community and the importance of standing together against discrimination and stigma.
