The 33-year-old man accused of killing 42 women, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, has managed to escape from police custody in Nairobi, Kenya, sparking concerns about the effectiveness of law enforcement and the fairness of the judicial process. Khalusha, who was being detained at a police station in Nairobi, was awaiting further investigation into the allegations against him. It was early on Tuesday morning when Khalusha and 12 other inmates escaped by cutting through wire mesh in their cells and scaling the perimeter wall.
The head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Mohamed Amin, described the escape as “unfortunate” and noted that Khalusha was a high-value suspect who was set to face serious charges. According to Amin, the investigation into the escape is underway, and action will be taken accordingly. Acting Police Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli also issued a statement, announcing that disciplinary measures had been taken against eight officers, including the area and station commanders, as well as officers who were on duty at the time of the escape. Masengeli revealed that preliminary investigations indicate that the escape was aided by insiders, as officers were deployed accordingly to guard the station.
Khalusha was arrested in July after 10 bodies and several body parts were found wrapped in plastic sacks in the Kware area of Nairobi. Police claimed that Khalusha confessed to killing 42 women, including his wife. However, Khalusha’s lawyer disputed the allegations, saying that his client was tortured and forced to confess and maintained his innocence.
