Rahul Gandhi is set to visit Manipur, starting with Jiribam, amidst heightened tensions following a recent gunfire incident in the district. His visit aims to address the ongoing issues in the region, with plans to also visit Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts.
Gunmen fired shots from Phaitol in Tamenglong district towards Gularthol around 3:30 am on Monday, according to police reports.
By 10 am, Tamenglong police had arrested two individuals from the Kuki-Zo community in connection with the incident and seized weapons.
Fortunately, there were no injuries, but an armoured Casspir vehicle was targeted in the gunfire.
“There was proper coordination between the police, the CRPF and the Assam Rifles in countering the attack,” Singh said.
Tensions in Jiribam escalated after the killing of Soibam Sarathkumar Singh, a Meitei resident, on June 6. This led to retaliatory violence where homes of Kuki-Zo residents were torched by Meitei residents, resulting in over 1,000 Kuki-Zo people being displaced and seeking shelter in Cachar.
In response, homes of Meitei families in the Borobekra division were also set on fire, displacing more than 900 people who are now residing in relief camps within the district.
Since the escalation of tension last month, the district has been relatively calm, aside from a recent incident where a police checkpoint was set on fire two weeks ago.
