Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin announced plans to build a new international airport in Hosur, near Bangalore, covering 2,000 acres and designed for 30 million passengers annually.
The project aims to transform Hosur into a major economic hub, fostering socio-economic development in the surrounding regions of Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri.
“Since the establishment of our Dravidian model governance, Tamil Nadu has been advancing in all sectors,” said Stalin, adding that the state is implementing various long-term plans to transform Hosur into a major economic development hub by developing modern infrastructure.
Hosur holds a strategic position in Tamil Nadu due to its proximity to Bengaluru and strong infrastructure, making it a hub for electronics manufacturing.
The town has attracted substantial investments, particularly in electronics and electric vehicles. Key players such as Tata Electronics and TVS have established operations there, contributing to its industrial growth.
Industries Minister T.R.B Rajaa emphasized Hosur’s strategic significance due to its close proximity to both Bengaluru and Chennai, highlighting its growing manufacturing ecosystem.
Calling the announcement a “monumental step forward for the region” and a “a game-changer”, Rajaa said:
“This project will greatly enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth, benefiting not only Hosur but also neighbouring districts such as Dharmapuri and Salem, while also providing a significant boost to various parts of Bengaluru”.
J. Jeyaranjan, vice-chairperson of the State Planning Commission, emphasized that the new airport in Hosur will improve regional connectivity and attract additional investments, reinforcing Hosur’s status as a significant industrial and economic hub.
In April 2022, then Industries Minister Thangam Thenarasu announced several key projects in the Hosur region, including an industrial housing project near Tata Group’s electronics ecosystem costing Rs 1,000 crore, development of a new industrial estate by SIPCOT, and infrastructure upgrades in existing hubs through the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model.
These initiatives aimed to enhance industrial infrastructure and support economic growth in the area.
