Shawn Michaels, WWE’s Vice President of Talent Development Creative, has been making waves in NXT, with TNA Knockouts World Champion Jordynne Grace appearing recently. NXT’s successful Battleground show featured Grace in one of the main event matches.
Michaels revealed that the company’s recruitment focuses more on the athlete’s character than their talents. This statement sparked a response from former employee Matt Cardona on social media. Cardona, who is married to NXT’s Chelsea Green, has shown interest in returning to his former stomping grounds.
Speaking to the Schmo, Michaels discussed athletes and their roles in NXT. He mentioned that, while skills like ‘It’ factor, charisma, footwork, and coordination are essential, the athlete’s character is of utmost importance. Michaels said, “When everything is said and done, it’s going to come down to attitude and character… That’s one of the things in NXT that Hunter put in place years ago… Character trumps talent.”
Michaels’ approach has contributed to the success of NXT, evident in the growth of talents like Carmelo Hayes. Once a part of NXT, Hayes has become a featured star on WWE SmackDown, wrestling against legends like Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes.
Matt Cardona’s interest in returning to NXT, combined with Michaels’ take on recruitment, highlights the importance of character development in WWE’s evolving terrain.
