In the wrestling world of the 1990s, Ric Flair was a prominent figure in WCW, leaving a lasting legacy. Recently, fellow wrestling legend Ted DiBiase Sr. delved into a podcast episode, reflecting on Flair and Roddy Piper’s alleged issues with Sean Waltman during their time in WCW.
The year 1997 saw Flair teaming up with Piper and former football player Kevin Greene to take down the nWo faction at Slamboree. Post the event, rumors circulated that Flair and Piper believed Waltman, a two-time WWE Hall of Famer, wasn’t a big enough star to be part of the match. DiBiase Sr., a former nWo member, shared his perspective on Everybody’s Got A Pod, suggesting that Waltman needed more exposure and victories to boost his status in the wrestling world.
The original nWo trio comprised Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, and Hulk Hogan. However, due to Hogan’s commitments, Waltman, also known as Syxx and X-Pac, represented the stable at Slamboree 1997. Waltman was still in the process of solidifying his reputation in the wrestling industry, a journey that eventually led him to become a key figure in the D-Generation X during the Attitude Era.
Considering the immense star power involved in the match, DiBiase Sr. acknowledged why Flair and Piper might have had reservations about working with Waltman. Reflecting on the situation, he mentioned, “I can see where those guys [Flair and Piper] had an argument.” Waltman’s career progressed as he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame twice, first as part of D-Generation X in 2019 and then as a member of the nWo in 2020.
