Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has advised Benfica’s rising star, Joao Neves, against a potential move to Old Trafford this summer.

Neves, who has been catching attention with his performances at Benfica, has been the subject of heavy speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United.

Despite the allure of a potential big-money transfer, the 19-year-old has not committed his future to Benfica, although his contract with the club runs until 2028.

Other clubs like Liverpool and Chelsea have also shown interest in Neves, with reports suggesting he has a release clause set at €120 million (£102m/£130m).

Having experienced spells at both Benfica and Manchester United, Matic shared his perspective on Neves’ potential move.

Despite being impressed with Neves’ abilities, Matic believes the youngster should prioritize staying at Benfica for further development and the opportunity to compete in the Champions League, an aspect that might not be guaranteed at Manchester United next season.

In an interview with O Jogo, Matic expressed his view, stating, “I think it’s too early for him to take that step of leaving. If it were him, I would stay at Benfica for a few more years to play in the Champions League and to mature more.

I’m sure his time will come and, therefore, he doesn’t need to rush. Joao is already at a big club at this point. I’m sure his future at Benfica will be very good. I think it’s too early to leave, but of course, in the end, it’s always his decision.”

Acknowledging Neves’ talent, Matic described him as a “fantastic player” with a promising future at Benfica. Despite attracting interest from Premier League clubs, Matic emphasized the importance of maturity and development at this stage of Neves’ career.

Meanwhile, Manchester United faces an offseason marked by potential changes following a disappointing campaign.

Uncertainty looms over Erik ten Hag’s managerial future, while Sir Jim Ratcliffe aims to bolster the staff with additions like Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox. The club is also expected to focus on new signings, particularly in midfield, where finding a replacement for Casemiro is deemed a priority.
