It appears that Brentford’s Ivan Toney is poised to depart, and while Chelsea and Arsenal have tempered their interest, Manchester United may entertain the idea of securing his services.
With Toney’s contract at Brentford winding down to its final year, reports suggest that the Bees are inclined to offload the striker this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer. It has now been indicated that United could be considering a move for the 28-year-old, especially with new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe eyeing a squad overhaul.
Initially, Arsenal and Chelsea were prominent contenders for Toney’s signature during the January transfer window. However, both clubs have since shifted their focus, with Arsenal reportedly monitoring RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres.
Despite Toney likely being available for a fee ranging between £40 million ($49.8m) and £50 million ($62.2m) at the season’s end, Chelsea is looking into alternative options.
Interestingly, Manchester United already possesses a similar player profile in Rasmus Hojlund. Yet, the club is evidently seeking an experienced striker to alleviate the pressure on the young Dane, and Toney emerges as a potential candidate to fulfill this role.
Regarding Toney’s future, both the player and Brentford have reiterated that a decision will only be reached after the conclusion of the season. Toney’s next appearance could be in Brentford’s clash against Luton Town on April 20, provided he recuperates from his current injury concern.
