The Kansas City Chiefs have signed European rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit, the team announced Friday, adding another potential offensive weapon to their roster.
The Chiefs plan to evaluate Rees-Zammit as a running back and possibly a wide receiver.
His most immediate impact is expected to come on special teams, particularly as a return specialist under the NFL’s new kickoff format.
Rees-Zammit, 23, announced in January his intention to pursue a career in the NFL.
He showcased his skills at the NFL’s International Player Pathway pro day last week, recording a 4.43 in the 40-yard dash.
The Welsh athlete then visited several teams before agreeing to terms with the Chiefs.
This season introduces a new rule allowing each team to have a 17th roster spot on the practice squad specifically for an international player.
Teams are also permitted to bring up an international practice squad player to the active roster up to three times during the season, providing more opportunities for players to develop and play.
Additionally, teams receive one training camp roster exemption for a qualifying international player.
