During Detroit’s 142-124 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night, Detroit Pistons general manager Troy Weaver engaged in a heated exchange with a heckling fan in the stands.
This resulted in Weaver directing explicit language towards the individual and subsequently pointing him out to arena security at Little Caesars Arena. Video footage of the incident circulated on social media, capturing the tense moment.
In the video, an unidentified man was heard saying to Weaver, “You threatened me.” However, Weaver declined to provide any comment on the matter when approached on Sunday.
Jeffrey Calloway, a 46-year-old season-ticket holder from Detroit, provided additional details of the incident, mentioning that he was seated near Weaver when the fan approached the team’s general manager twice before ultimately being escorted away.
“The guy that was involved in the incident, wearing Red Wings gear, came over and was gesturing towards the scoreboard earlier in the game,” Calloway explained in a telephone interview Sunday.
“Troy Weaver simply shrugged his shoulders and responded with, ‘OK,’ after which the individual returned to his seat.
When [Jalen] Duren was ejected [midway through the fourth quarter], the individual returned and criticized him for his performance. Subsequently, Troy Weaver instructed the fan to leave, prompting ushers or security to intervene.”
Security personnel then escorted the fan away from the seating area.
This incident occurred amidst a challenging season for the Pistons, who earlier set a single-season league record with 28 consecutive losses.
Currently tied with Washington for the league’s worst record, Detroit has faced significant struggles under Weaver’s leadership, with a record of 70-229 in three-plus seasons.
Detroit is scheduled to host Charlotte on Monday night.
