Social media erupted following Jeremy Doku’s escape from a potential penalty situation stemming from a “reckless” high challenge on Alexis Mac Allister.

In the thrilling 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield, late drama unfolded when Doku made contact with Mac Allister in injury time.

Referee Michael Oliver opted not to award a penalty for the incident, a decision upheld by the Video Assistant Referee.

Nevertheless, social media users accused the referee of favoring City, arguing that Liverpool was denied a final opportunity to clinch victory.

Well-known Manchester United supporter Mark Goldbridge expressed disbelief, stating on X: “Unbelievable at the end. Speechless.

Anywhere else on that pitch, Doku’s challenge would be deemed reckless. Liverpool have been unjustly treated there. And it’s Oliver favoring City again…”

@elfayz remarked: “Doku didn’t even make contact with the ball. Liverpool got robbed, plain and simple.”

The Athletic’s @JamesPearceLFC commented: “Jeremy Doku was exceedingly fortunate to escape punishment.

Stuart Attwell was on VAR. It’s hard to ignore the feeling that had this occurred earlier in the game, the referee would have reviewed the incident.”

X user @LFCJ7 mocked the decision, quipping: “He doesn’t even touch the ball, they said doku’s foot was in a ‘reasonable position’ ahahaha”

@FootballReprt on X argued: “Mac Allister won the ball with his shoulder. Doku made contact with the ball, but you can’t make that challenge, I mean come on! That’s a penalty and a red card.”

Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp asserted: “This is a penalty for all football people on the planet. If you think it is not one then maybe you aren’t a football person.

“The draw maintains Arsenal’s lead in the Premier League standings, with Liverpool trailing by goal difference and one point behind Manchester City.

The title race appears poised for a thrilling conclusion, with only 10 matchdays remaining in the season. Arsenal is yet to face Manchester City, and Liverpool will be eager to capitalize on any opportunity despite the draw.
