A severe snowstorm hit Moscow on Sunday night, continuing to dump heavy snow overnight and causing significant disruptions to road traffic and flights. The snowfall added an additional 9 inches to the already high levels of snow in the city, making it a challenging task for the snow-clearing efforts. According to deputy mayor Pyotr Biryukov, the city was able to mobilize around 135,000 people and 18,000 pieces of equipment to tackle the massive snowdrifts, yet nearly 200 trucks got stuck in the snow, requiring assistance from road traffic workers to restore normal traffic flow.

The Moscow transport department reported that 53 flights were delayed and five more were canceled on Monday morning in three out of four of the city’s airports. The majority of the delays occurred at Sheremetyevo airport to the north of the capital, with Domodedovo and Vnukovo airports to the south also experiencing disruptions. However, flights departed on schedule at Zhukovsky Airport to the southeast. The heavy snow and extremely cold temperatures, with readings as low as minus 50C (minus 58F), were also reported in the Siberian region of Yakutia, with similar temperatures expected in the Magadan region in the coming days.

For residents and visitors alike, the situation was particularly challenging, with many vehicles struggling to navigate the snow-covered roads. The city’s road network was severely disrupted, causing significant delays and disruptions. The Moscow transport department worked tirelessly to clear the snow and restore normal traffic flow, but the heavy snowfall made the task a daunting one. Despite these efforts, the city’s road network was still severely disrupted, causing significant delays and disruptions for all those traveling in and out of Moscow.

As the city continued to dig out from the massive snowfall, the transport department remained on high alert, working to restore normal traffic flow and alleviate the pressure on the city’s airports. The situation was particularly challenging for those commencing their journeys, as the heavy snow and freezing temperatures made travel conditions extremely hazardous. Despite the difficulties, the city’s residents and visitors demonstrated remarkable resilience, adapting to the circumstances and finding ways to navigate the snowy streets.
