Russian missile strikes in Odesa have resulted in the death of one port worker and the injury of three Filipino crew members on a Liberian-flagged freighter, according to Ukraine’s armed forces. The ship was set to carry iron ore to China when it was targeted, and the extent of the damage is yet to be reported. The Odesa port, a crucial economic hub for Ukraine, has been attacked by Russia 21 times since August, disrupting grain exports and causing damage to critical infrastructure.
Despite the establishment of a new Black Sea export corridor, which has allowed over 50 ships to set sail, Russian attacks continue to target Ukrainian civilians, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries across various regions. In the southern city of Kherson, one civilian was killed and three were wounded in Russian firing on a residential area. In the Donetsk region, Russian shelling killed two people in Toretsk and wounded one civilian in Chasiv Yar. Artillery shelling in the Kharkiv region near Izium also resulted in the death of a man, while residential areas in Kherson and the area around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station were hit, causing injuries and damage.
As the conflict continues, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now the deputy head of Russia’s national security council, boasted that the military has recruited over 410,000 volunteer soldiers this year and is receiving a steady influx of new recruits. In contrast, Ukraine is forced to rush new recruits to the frontlines due to the current combat situation, allowing Russia to focus on training its new soldiers. The ongoing conflict has caused significant devastation and loss of life, and it remains unclear when the hostilities will cease.
