Bears Cause Commotion in Northern Japan Tatami Mat Factory

Bears in tatami mat factory in Misato

In a peculiar incident, three bears – believed to be a parent and two cubs – wandered into a tatami mat factory in Misato, Akita prefecture, northern Japan. The bears, thought to have originated from nearby forest, were attracted to the factory by an unknown scent or sound, and the owner never expected them to actually enter the premises. The authorities, comprising town officials and police officers, were promptly alerted to the situation and made an attempt to scare the bears away using fire crackers, but the animals remained firm.

In an effort to capture the bears, the officials set up a pair of cages at the entrance to the factory. The bears spent nearly a day inside the cages, with officials waiting patiently for a safe and humane way to remove them. Eventually, on Thursday morning, the cages were removed from the factory and loaded onto a pick-up truck with a crane, and the bears were transferred to an undisclosed location.

However, the bears were ultimately killed due to concerns that they would return to the town and pose a threat to residents if released back into the wild. This decision was likely influenced by the recent surge in bear attacks in the area, with a record 30 cases reported in 2023 alone. Experts attribute the increase in bear attacks to a scarcity of acorns, the bears’ staple food, causing them to venture into residential areas in search of alternative sources.

Mother Bear

The incident sparked concerns among town officials, who advised residents on how to minimize their chances of encountering bears. Residents were warned not to leave rubbish outside and instructed hikers to carry bells to make noise, use anti-bear spray, or lie flat face-down in case of an encounter with bears. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of coexisting with wildlife and taking necessary precautions to minimize the risk of conflicts.

Experts emphasize the need to be vigilant and take steps to prevent encounters with bears, given the increasing frequency of such incidents. The recent surge in bear attacks has highlighted the importance of respecting these wild animals and taking steps to protect both humans and bears. The tatami mat factory incident is a sobering reminder of the potential consequences of human-bear conflict and the importance of finding a peaceful coexistence with these magnificent creatures.
