Pope Francis held a private meeting with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel at the Vatican, his first full week back after undergoing abdominal surgery. The meeting, marked by discussions on diplomatic relations and Cuba’s current situation, was accompanied by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State. The meeting highlighted the “historic visit” of St John Paul II to Cuba in 1998, and the Church’s efforts to alleviate the country’s economic crisis through charity.

Francis’ visit to Cuba in 2015 was part of the Vatican’s effort to foster better international relations, emphasizing dialogue and understanding between nations. The meeting between Francis and Diaz-Canel touched on international themes of reciprocal interest, with both leaders emphasizing the importance of continuing commitment to the common good. The Vatican’s approach to international relations stresses dialogue, understanding, and cooperation between nations.

The meeting comes at a time when Cuba is struggling with an economic crisis, and the Pope’s presence may be seen as a symbol of support for the island nation. The Vatican has a nuanced stance on Cuba, urging the government to respect human rights while expressing skepticism regarding economic sanctions imposed by the United States.

As Francis recovers from surgery, he is being advised to pace himself and avoid strenuous activities. In response, the Pope’s Wednesday morning audience with pilgrims and tourists in St Peter’s Square has been suspended for the month of July, partly due to the hot weather and partly to give the pontiff a break.

During the meeting, a small group of protesters demonstrated at the end of a boulevard leading to St Peter’s Square, demanding human rights be respected in Cuba and calling for the release of political prisoners. The Vatican has previously expressed concern about human rights violations in Cuba and has pressed the government to release Cubans who have been jailed. Despite these concerns, the meeting between Francis and Diaz-Canel reflects the Vatican’s commitment to engaging with nations and fostering greater understanding and cooperation between countries.

Francis’ meeting with Diaz-Canel emphasizes the importance of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Cuba, as well as the Church’s role in charity and support during the country’s economic crisis. The Vatican’s approach to international relations emphasizes dialogue, understanding, and cooperation, reflecting the meeting’s focus on the common good and mutual respect.
