Liam Byrne, a 42-year-old Dublin native and trusted member of the Kinahan organised crime group, was arrested by Spanish authorities in Mallorca, Spain, on suspicion of firearms offences. Byrne, considered one of the most trusted members of the group, was dining with family members in a restaurant in the Alcudia area of Mallorca when he was arrested on Sunday evening. He had arrived in Palma Airport from Dubai, UAE, just days earlier.

The arrest is the result of an intelligence-led investigation by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), supported by the Spanish National Police and An Garda Síochána in Ireland. The NCA had obtained Trade and Co-operation Agreement (TACA) warrants for Byrne’s arrest after monitoring his online communications on EncroChat, which showed he was involved in the supply and acquisition of firearms. Byrne is considered the de-facto leader of the Kinahan cartel in the UK, having taken over from Thomas ‘Bomber’ Kavanagh, who is currently serving a 21-year sentence for drug trafficking. Kavanagh is also Byrne’s brother-in-law.

Byrne’s arrest follows a pattern of the Kinahan gang trying to evade justice by operating through Dubai and other international hubs. The NCA has been working closely with the Spanish National Police to monitor the group’s activities and disrupt their operations. The agency’s regional head of investigations, Kay Mellor, said that Byrne’s arrest is a significant success in the NCA’s ongoing efforts to target the Kinahan crime group. Byrne is currently in custody while extradition proceedings continue.

The arrest is a major blow to the Kinahan cartel, which has been responsible for numerous high-profile crimes across the UK and Ireland. The cartel has been the subject of a long-term investigation by the NCA, which has been working closely with its international partners to disrupt their operations. Byrne’s arrest is a significant milestone in this ongoing effort.
